The GOP could easily have filled another night with great speakers in Tampa, but how does the Chicago Gang fill even three nights?
They cannot talk about the economy and the killing of bin Laden is already generating ill-will among the men who carried out the mission and will generate more if it is mentioned more than in passing.
The Stimulus? Solyndra? Fast & Furious? The HHS Regulations?
No, it has to be “obstructionism.” That’s all they’ve got, and the president already has a reputation for whining.
Going to be an interesting if almost certainly uninspiring 72 hours.
The second look at Clint is in full swing, and Michael Barone’s take on my program tonight was a great summary. Barone said he was at first very negative but has come to realize the impact the icon had: “You have to let them go” was a permission slip to fire the first black president, handed out to a lot of folks who had great hopes for President Obama but have come to realize that he just is in over hi s head, and lacks the skills sets to do the job much less repair the immense damage he has done.
After the show I got an email from a Hollywood pal that reads in relevant part:
had the sound down when Clint stepped on staged, looked over at the tube (how DEAD is that colloquialism?) and went…
OH &^%$$!!!!! i was screaming “Iceberg, iceberg, iceberg!!!!” at the TV…
i raised the volume and caught a few of those rather lengthy arrhythmic pauses and thought…
“MAN THE LIFEBOATS, WOMEN AND ROMNEY FIRST!!!!!!*
then, AHEM,…at about 3 minutes, i started ROTFLMAO…
Mr. Eastwood, with whom i have been in; rooms, parties, events on about 5 or 6 occasions in the last 40 years gave the Romney/Ryan ticket yesterday was very close to his normal mien, however…what we saw was…
ONE OF EASTWOOD’S BEST PERFORMANCES….EVER
Clint did the BEST “Jefferson Smith” (from one of our favorite movies) since 1939…
looking at the details;
the off the rack non-tailored new suit, shirt and tie, NOT QUITE A GOOD FIT…
the askew hair, NOT QUITE UNCOMBED OR UNARRANGED
the casual posture, the odd pauses, the out-of-sync gestures
the strange vocal dynamics…
This was Clint Eastwood doing Jimmy Stewart doing Jefferson Smith..
it had for its VERY VERY SPECIFIC AUDIENCE;
over 60 years old Reagan Democrats and Center/Independents..
and it was FABULOUS…
i knew some big name Hollywood Lefties who are FREAKING OUT OVER HOW GOOD EASTWOOD WAS,
Nice summary, that. And exactly what the assembled Manhattan-Beltway media elite and perhaps even some Romney inner circle didn’t get. The latter may not have planned on it, but they ought to make a spot with the line that begins “We own this country,” moves to “politicians are employees,” and ends with “let them go.” Clint’s voice over pictures of Solyndra, the president playing golf, unemployment lines and foreclosed houses. You get the picture. As did Clint.
