Comparisons to Brave Sir Robin have been duly made and note. Karen is not quote ready for prime time, and maybe not the weekends if she isn’t able to handle a couple of questions about which there is no reasonable debate on the answers.
One of my listeners wrote that Finney knew the trouble she was in and the line of reasoning that flowed from the single admission that if there was a senior communist spy in the government during the McCarthy era, and probably wasn’t skilled enough to carve off Hiss, assign him to Nixon and HUAC, and return fire back at McCarthy’s antics
But as soon as Finney asserted that “No, there weren’t Communists who infiltrated our government,” the interview was doomed for her because that level of ignorance means she would either have had to admit error on that answer and thus recant the premise of her absurd comparison between Ted Cruz and Tailgunner Joe, or dig the hole of dumminess deeper and deeper. Her refusal to be specific about Hiss could have been simple ignorance or a recognition that a few far-left hold-outs –perhaps most of them dedicated MSNBC watchers– still cling to the idea that Hiss was framed.
Who knows, her first and last appearance on the show marked her as a featherweight, her show as even less interesting than ordinary MSNBC fare, and certain to fail unless it walls off informed conservatives from anything like sustained argument with her.
