The website of the New Hampshire Secretary of State informs us that:

ABSENTEE BALLOTS
Absentee ballots are available from your town or city clerk 30 days prior to an election.  Request the absentee ballot application from the clerk or submit a request in writing which should include your name, voting address, mailing address and your signature.  Clerks may accept completed absentee ballots submitted in person until 5:00 p.m. the day before an election or until 5:00 p.m. on election day if received through the mail.

Which means that the first ballots in the primaries will be available –and presumably many cast– on December 10.  Will an absentee equivalent of Dixville Notch materialize in the Granite State?

The approach of real voting explains Romney’s heavy television schedule in the Granite State and also forces candidates to consider ramping up soon in California, where voters can receive –and cast– their ballots on January 7.  It also means that no candidate can go off the air during the second half of December, at least not in New Hampshire.

Two questions:  Which network will win the race to find and interview the very first voter in the 2008 election?  Count on all of them locating December 10 voters in NH to trail and interview.

And what sort of ads should the candidates be running in the week before Christmas? That’s my new contest: Submit your amateur ad (for any candidate, D or R) that employs the Christmas theme best.  First Prize:  $500.Send me the link for your work along with your contact info.  Negative ads accepted, though of course only the 527s will run ads showing Hillary in a sleigh loaded with a huge pile of coal etc.
