According to sources close to the investigation the dead suspect is an 18-year-old man from Chantilly who has been previously arrested on carjacking charges in Montgomery County.
Officers from the Fairfax County Police Department have arrested a man who carjacked a vehicle last night in Rockville, drove the car to the area of his home, and then turned himself in to Fairfax County Police.
Yesterday at approximately 6:45 p.m., a 33-year-old man from Germantown was driving out of a business parking lot in the 9900 block of Blackwell Road in Rockville, when he stopped to allow a man to walk in front of his car. The man approached the victim’s driver’s side window, and claiming to have a gun, told the victim to get out of the vehicle. The victim chose to err on the side of caution and got out of his Toyota 4-Runner. The suspect got into the vehicle and allowed the victim to remove his personal property before the suspect drove away. No gun was ever displayed and there were no injuries.
At approximately 10:30 p.m., Fairfax County Police notified detectives from the Montgomery County Police Major Crimes Division ‘” Robbery Section that a man driving a Toyota 4-Runner had come to one of their district stations to turn himself in. After confirming the incident with Montgomery County Robbery detectives, Michael Kennedy, age 18, of the 6200 block of Prince Way in Centerville, Virginia, was taken into custody. Kennedy is being held in the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center as a fugitive from justice. He is awaiting extradition back to Montgomery County where a warrant has been obtained charging him with armed carjacking, carjacking, and theft over $500.
This is not confirmation of the sniper’s identity, but a plausible identification.
UPDATE: The Post account is confirming my surmise of four hours ago. The 18 year old who killed the officer and wounded others was Michael Kennedy.
