Dr. Paul Rahe of Hillsdale College on the President’s Address to the Joint Congress

HH: It is the last radio hour of the week, and that means the Hillsdale Dialogue. Since four years ago, I’ve devoted the last hour of every radio week to a conversation either with Hillsdale College President Dr. Larry Arnn or one of his esteemed colleagues about issues of lasting importance. This week, Dr. Paul A. Rahe is my guest. Professor Rahe holds the Charles O. Lee and Louise K. Lee Chair in Western Heritage at Hillsdale College, where he is a professor of history. He is sadly a Yalie, twice. He’s the author of many, many wonderful books, most recently The Spartan Regime. He’s been here many times before. His website is www.paularahe.com. Professor Rahe, welcome back to the Hugh Hewitt Show, great to have you on.

HH: On Friday, the last radio hour of the week means it is time for the Hillsdale Dialogue. All things Hillsdale available, of course, at www.hillsdale.edu. But these conversations with Dr. Larry Arnn, the president of Hillsdale College, or one of his colleagues date back to 2013, and they are all collected at www.hughforhillsdale.com. And we are busy right now collating the audio with the transcripts which have been done all the way back to 2013, making it easy, accessible and indeed indexed. But now, Dr. Arnn has gone and done something that screwed up my whole plan, as he often does. I have a plan for this show, but then Dr. Arnn doesn’t tell me that he’s appearing at CPAC, and going to make a wonderful speech. And we played that speech in the first hour, and people want me to talk to him about that speech and about Reince Priebus and Steve Bannon showing up, and the Vice President. So Dr. Arnn, a little coordination, please.

HH: I hope you are having a good Friday as California is on the verge of washing away, according to the forecast. Dr. Larry Arnn lived in California for a long time, the president of Hillsdale College. All things Hillsdale available at www.hillsdale.edu. This is the Hillsdale Dialogue, the last radio hour of the week for me when I’m joined by Dr. Arnn or one of his colleagues from Hillsdale College to talk about matters both lasting and important, and sometimes transient and fleeting, but mostly lasting and important. Dr. Arnn, do you remember in those days when you lived in California when a rainstorm would approach, and the doom machine would begin?

HH: It is the last radio hour of the week, and this means the Hillsdale Dialogue with Dr. Larry Arnn, president of Hillsdale College. All things Hillsdale available at www.hillsdale.edu, but this is a very special week. More than a year ago, Dr. Arnn was, I believe, the first person to say, and he said it many times, something fundamental is afoot in the country, and he always predicted the Trump win, and he never wavered in that prediction, making him the only true Nostradamus of the last cycle. But Dr. Arnn, something fundamental is afoot on the campus of Hillsdale College. What’s your announcement today?

HH: It is the last radio hour of the week full of fury and thunder, and Dr. Larry Arnn, president of Hillsdale College. And it is time for the Hillsdale Dialogue, all of which are collected at www.hughforhillsdale.com. The extraordinary thing about our archive of four-plus years of conversations that you can go back and actually see what we said about Mr. Trump, now President Trump from a year and a half ago, Dr. Arnn being one of the few people in America who called it from the beginning, something fundamental is afoot. And it’s all on tape. But before, and good morning, Dr. Arnn, good to have you.

HH: A week ago today, I was at the Kirby Center, Hillsdale College’s lantern in the shadow of the Congress in the Boyle studios built by Bold Gold Media, where I was yesterday with Vince Benedetto, by the way. I am in Rosslyn today, but today, I’m talking with Hillsdale President Larry Arnn. It’s the Hillsdale Dialogue. All Hillsdale Dialogues dating back now four-plus years are collected at www.hughforhillsdale.com. You ought to visit www.hillsdale.edu to see everything Hillsdale. And Dr. Arnn, a week ago, we were together anticipating Donald Trump’s inaugural address, and today I want to go through it. But first, your reaction to it from 30,000 feet and a week later? What did you think of the President’s remarks to the nation?
