It is hard to see how the new House puts immigration reform near the top of its agenda when the economy and defense policy needs so much attention, but an attempt to identify the 80% principles would be a good place to start. The 80% principles are propositions with which the 10% at either end of the spectrum of the immigration debate might disagree but which garner the support of the vast majority of Americans.
Too bad the president wasted so much capital on a deficit commission that was doomed from the start. A bipartisan inquiry into the 80% principles might have moved immigration reform down the road.
