An e-mail from Colorado Springs:
We at First Pres in Colorado Springs, Dr. Jim Singleton senior pastor, have been in contact with Rev. Tim Brown at First Pres in Ocean Springs, MS. We will make a congregational commitment to that church for this time of recovery. Won’t it be an adventure to find out all that means!?
Bravo to both First Pres churches. It takes grace to ask and grace to receive, and both congregations will benefit from this pairing. here’s a list of all PCUSA churches in the area.
And here’s an effort to collect stuff that is in short supply in the relief areas: children’s underwear, diapers, bottles, formula, pacifiers. If you live in Southern California, and have a good size quantity of these things that are prepackaged –please, no one or two drops offs– you can bring them to Woodbridge H.S. in Irvine this Saturday between 1 and 5 PM. You can also make a cash donation to that effort.
The problem that relief efforts are running into is illustrated by this e-mail:
I am one of those usually compassionate people who, as of today, cannot bring myself to give a dime to the relief effort. Actually, I have donated to the Soldier’s Angels Relief Fund but had planned on doing much more. Last Tuesday, I had even considered taking my vacation time and heading out to Louisiana with a Red Cross group that was taking lay volunteers to help out of Sacramento. But by Wednesday, I was beginning to become so angry that I opted not to.
I won’t go into all the reasons why I am so angry, as I am sure you have heard and read them all by now. I have spent time as a missionary in poverty-stricken areas and even gave to the refugee crisis in Yugoslavia. But I cannot bring myself to do anymore this time.
I am sure there are a lot more people out there like me. Perhaps you could help us to somehow win back our compassion for these tragedy-stricken people. Because between the MSM, the Jesse Jacksons, and the ingrates — my anger has successfully blocked out the bleeding heart I usually have for victims of disasters.
I hope those who have abandoned the relief effort because of the harsh and unjustified attacks on President Bush and federal officials generally come back to the effort once they realize that the MSM and the professional critics of the hard left dont speak for the majority of Americans and certainly not for the victims.
