My new Townhall.com column notes that the president’s re-election campaign got off to a stumbling start when John Boehner refused to allow a co-equal branch of government to become a setting for a purely political speech by an unpopular incumbent looking for an opportunity to get some traction in falling polls.

Yesterday’s “surreal volley of letters” as the New York Times deemed them, actually provided an important reminder to the country that the president doesn’t direct the Congress any more than the Congress directs the president. The president’s high-handedness resulted in getting his political head handed to him, a good and useful reminder that he isn’t royalty.
