The Patriot Act

Not long after the debate over Judge Alito’s nomination ends, a new debate over The Patriot Act extension will begin. This Washington Post story suggests that there will no changes made to the House-Senate compromise reached in December, and that the debate that was postponed by the five week extension will resume, and the country should watch very closely indeed which senators block renewal of the Act via a filibuster.

Judiciary Committee Chairman F. James Sensenbrenner Jr. (R-Wis.) was wise to deny the Senate blockaders a six month extension in December. This debate will tell the public very early in the year which of the senate’s number need to be retired in November, or noted for retirement in the out years.
