The Lincoln-Douglas Debates

As Hillsdale College President Larry Arnn and I have focused on the Lincoln-Douglas debates we have used clips from this magnificent 21 hour recreation of those seven epic debates, featuring David Strathairn as Abraham Lincoln and Richard Dreyfuss as Judge Stephen Douglas as the two contended against each other ion the 1858 Illinois United States Senate election.

You owe it to yourself, and teachers to their students, to buy and listen to this magnificent production for for more than two or three minutes here and there.  It is a genuinely inspiring work of drama and history combined, and perfect for teaching the controversies preceding to the Civil War and why, as Lincoln put it in his Second Inaugural:

Both parties deprecated war, but one of them would make war rather than let the nation survive, and the other would accept war rather than let it perish, and the war came.
