The GOP Stumbles Again

Thursday, February 17, 2011  |  posted by Hugh Hewitt

My new column is on the emerging image of a House GOP in disarray on the key issue of the day –spending.

I will discuss this rolling collapse of credibility with Mark Steyn today, but much damage is already done and getting worse. Many House Republicans are voting with all of the Democrats to block most spending cuts (except when Democrats with Republicans join to kill a favorite defense project of the Speaker’s) which means these Republicans are voting for more borrowing, for when the government is 1.65 trillion in the red, all of these approrpiations are just borrowed dollars.

The president has already threatened to veto the minimum level of cuts already put forward, and the GOP is shrinking back in horror. There is no way to spin this as other than a refusal by the House GOP to do obvious things though hard ones, and the activists who sent the GOP to D.C. are drawing the conclusion that the freshmen have been cowed by the appropriators.
