Last week the French ambassador to Afghanistan took his leave, but not without a warning that the Afghan government established at such great cost is in real danger of losing control of the country when the American forces leave.

If that happens it will be the fourth attempt by the West, dating back to Alexander the Great, to bring the West to “the top of the world,” and to fail.

The first modern attempt began in 1839 with the British invasion of Afghanistan. A remarkable new book, Return of a King: The Battle for Afghanistan 1839-1842 by one of Great britain’s best popular historians ought to be read by every person interested in what will occur over the next three years, and for decades beyond.  Dalrymple will be my guest in studio today.
