The Elgin Cheese Days

The Elgin Cheese Days are upon us:

Highlights of Elgin Cheese Days Friday through June 17 include mud bog races and an all-school reunion.

Festivities begin Friday with citywide rummages sales from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. There also will be a kiddy parade starting at the fire hall at 6:30 p.m., a petting zoo from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and fireworks at dusk.

On Saturday, the Run, Walk and Wheel for Spinal Cord Injury Research will begin at 9 a.m. at the Plainview-Elgin-Millville 4-6 Building, the mud bog races start at 1 p.m. and a car show will be from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The all-school reunion begins at 4 p.m. at the PEM Middle School.

The parade begins at 1:30 p.m. June 17, with a motorcycle stunt show to follow and music at the American Legion from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The complete schedule includes many other activities. There will also be a kids’ carnival, men’s and women’s ball tournaments and food all weekend.

I learned of the Elgin equivalent of Burning Man from following a link at about a race for spinal cord research, where the proceeds benefit the Mayo Clinic’s research effort on those injuries.

I certainly hope Mitch, Ed, Scott and John, Nihilist, and the besotted gang at Fraters make it to cheese days and perhaps participate in the race.  The Northern Alliance Radio Network ought surely to be there.  If Jay Larson was still alive that would surely happen!
