Libbey’s defense team must be thrilled to find additional evidence that the CIA is shot through with partisans eager to do whatever is necessary to bring down not the country’s enemies but its president.
Even if that means breaking the law.
The more we learn about Ms. McCarthy, the more we will understand many aspects of the CIA’s assault on the Adminsitration. I’d like to know if she knew Valerie Plame, for instance.
I hope she is a witness in the Libbey trial.
If a career federal employee is opposed to the Administration, the honorable thing to do is resign and enter the political fray.
It is not to break the law in hopes of embarassing the Administration.
Next question for the Washington Post: Did it bother to check the contribution records of its leakers?
I found this White House press relase particularly interesting:
THE WHITE HOUSE
Office of the Press Secretary
June 16, 1998
STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY
National Security Advisor Samuel R. Berger announced today the
appointment of Mary O’Neil McCarthy as Special Assistant to the
President and Senior Director for Intelligence Programs. Mrs. McCarthy
succeeds Rand Beers.
Mary McCarthy had been Director of Intelligence Programs on the
National Security Council Staff since July 1996. Previously, Mrs.
McCarthy served as the National Intelligence Officer for Warning from
1994-1996 and as the Deputy National Intelligence Officer for Warning
from 1991-1994. She began government service in 1984 as an analyst in
the Directorate of Intelligence of the Central Intelligence Agency.
Prior to her government service, Mrs. McCarthy held positions in both
the private sector and academia. She was a Director, then Vice
President of BERI, SA, a firm conducting financial and political risk
assessments, from 1979-1984. Previously, she had taught at the
University of Minnesota and was Director of the Social Science Data
Archive at Yale University.
Mrs. McCarthy has a B.A. and M.A. in history from Michigan State
University and an M.A and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota.
A senior Clinton Administration figure burrowed into the CIA and illegally leaked classified material to a Washington Post reporter in order to embarass the Administration.
This is as astonishing as it is deeply troubling.
What else has Ms. McCarthy been illegally revealing to advance her private political agenda?
I would also ask of the Democrats: Do they really believe that any person who has access to Top Secret, Classified information, should be free to surreptitiously leak such material to friendly reporters when they disagree with a policy? This was Juan Williams position this morning. It is hard to imagine any responsible Democrat agreeing, but it is not as inconceivable as I might have once thought. They should remember that one day they will again inhabit the White House and this kind of legitimization of what once was unthinkable, has a habit of coming back to bite you in unpredictable ways. For those with short memories, I would remind you of the damage a Special Prosecutor, along with sexual harassment laws that were overtly weighted toward the interests of the accusers, did to the Presidency of William Clinton.
