Yesterday I confessed to finding thanks difficult in this time – there is simply so much bad news. And so I spent the day remembering all the good, and there has been so much good. But when my thoughts returned to the present things still seem so bleak. That which might have signaled the beginning of nuclear Armageddon at one time in my life happened yesterday. Fortunately this is not that time, but it is still horrible news. And so this morning I think of the admonition of the Apostle Paul to the church in Thessalonica, “…give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. ” Even in this current circumstances God wants me to thank Him.
And so this morning I pray with David the prayer he set forth in Psalm 54. David is beset by enemies and he asks God to deliver him from them, in that time of peril David assumes God’s answer and thanks God for His answer.
1 Save me, O God, by Your name,
And vindicate me by Your power.
2 Hear my prayer, O God;
Give ear to the words of my mouth.
3 For strangers have risen against me
And violent men have sought my life;
They have not set God before them. Selah.
4 Behold, God is my helper;
The Lord is the sustainer of my soul.
5 He will recompense the evil to my foes;
Destroy them in Your faithfulness.
6 Willingly I will sacrifice to You;
I will give thanks to Your name, O Lord, for it is good.
7 For He has delivered me from all trouble,
And my eye has looked with satisfaction upon my enemies
