If the Senate GOP can stop START’s by the lame duck Congress, the session will end on a very positive note for national security. START may indeed by ratified by the new Senate, but only after a debate to which Americans pay attention and amendments that significantly improve the country’s defense posture. Today’s statements by GOP Leader McConnell and GOP Whip Kyl effectively foreclose ratification, and President Obama would be doing the country a favor and depoliticizing this crucial issue by asking his caucus to postpone the debate over START until 2011. Pushing for a vote now telegraphs the president’s fecklessness on matters of national defense and an all-politics-all-the-time posture that will certainly be an issue in his re-election campaign. Trying to jam through a nuclear arms treaty as he did Obamacare confirms the president’s approach to governing has not changed in the least, despite the shellacking he took on November 2.
