Shell Fails To Explode; Detonates Later, Destroying What’s Left of New York Times’ Reputation
This is unbelievable. Powerline has the picture. (First posted at Reason.) Because Instapundit and Powerline posted news of the fraud swallowed whole by the paper which –a long time ago– set the standard for accuracy, the MSM, its readers and critics are all instantly aware of the latest in media pratfalls.
Like the Los Angeles Times’ publication on its front page of a quote taken from a long ago exposed April Fool’s Joke, this latest MSM howler raises a question about elite media, similar to that raised about the general reliability of the death penalty process now that DNA evidence has exonerated more than a dozen people scheduled for execution: How can we trust any result against this backdrop of unreliability?
The answer, of course, is that the death penalty process, flawed as it has been, is still light years more reliable than the New York Times, The Los Angeles Times and other elite media agenda journalists. The media collapse underway before our eyes is the result of sloppy habits mated to left-wing agendas and ideologically monochromatic newsrooms. Readers aren’t even surprised that the New York Times fell for a hoax as crude as its own left-wing agenda journalism.
I was a guest on CNN’s “On the Story” this weekend, critiquing the network’s coverage of the Judge Alito hearings. Not surprisingly I blasted their lame attempt to dress Jack Cafferty up as a sentient being with something to say worth listening to, and escapades like having Bill Maher guest host for Larry King with an Alito panel consisting of David Gergen, George Mitchell and David Dreier.
CNN’s reporters seem shocked that I found their coverage risible, but it was, and like the complete lack of self-knowledge that preceded New York Times’ embarassment or the Los Angeles Times’ red face, CNN’s cluelessness about its “experts” and the left-wing, know-nothing tilt they give the network’s coverage is a guarantee of still more errors and still fewer viewers.
MSM has plummeted –not fallen– in the public’s esteem because it insists that shells dressed up as missiles are simple errors, not symptoms of the deep disease that infects the MSM.
It will never recover until it admits its illness is the deep, deep bias that afflicts every elite media operation.
