As Patrick notes below, the process for replacing Wyoming’s late Senator Craig Thomas is underway. The state GOP gives the Democratic governor a list of three names from which the governor picks the replacement, who may or may not stand for re-election in 2008.
It seems to me that the state GOP should select two possible appointees, but should also automatically include Lynne Cheney. Mrs. Cheney ought not to have to ask to be on the list, to fill in applications, or even be asked to decline. The governor can be trusted not to appoint her without a conversation first, but a recognition of her long and excellent service as well as the Cheneys’ long career and service in Wyoming make this a no-brainer.
