Former United States Senator Rick Santorum is declaring his candidacy for the presidency today. Santorum’s appeal especially to traditional GOP “values voters” should not be underestimated, and his endless capacity for the hard work of campaigning is also the sort of virtue that succeeds in Iowa and New Hampshire. Santorum told George Stephanopoulos this morning that “We’re in it to win,” and those who dismiss the campaign are probably among those most surprised by Mike Huckabee’s success in 2008.

I will have one of the country’s leading theologians, Dr. Wayne Grudem, on the program today to discuss the values voter and their approach to politics. Grudem’s 2010 book Politics – According to the Bible: A Comprehensive Resource for Understanding Modern Political Issues in Light of Scripture ought to be on every political reporter’s desk if that journalist if covering the 2012 race and wants to understand genuinely how the values voters see the world.

I am in Phoenix today to give a lecture to the 2011 class of Blackstone Fellows of the Alliance Defense Institute. These law students are future leaders of the legal profession in the United States and my annual presentation to them is one the highlights of my year as I come away convinced that a new generation of extraordinary lawyers are rising up through the ranks to continue to battle to keep the Constitution at the center of American law and life.
