In yesterday’s interviews with Mark Steyn and Christopher Hitchens, I raised the prospect that some influential writers on the center-right are making those noises that precede a houseguest’s leaving. Call them the Coalition of the Weary, but William F. Buckley, George Will and Francis Fukuyama have all issued bulletins that it may be time for withdrawal from Iraq.
The realists –not in the old, Kissingerian sense of the world, but simpy realists– know there is no alternative to remaining in Iraq, Afghanistan and anywhere else the Islamists wish to nest. Allowed a nest, it is only a matter of time until their regrouped forces arrange another 9/11. We can leave Iraq when Iraqi troops and security forces are capable of suppressing the jihadists on their own.
