“No candidate has skipped the straw poll and gone on to win the caucuses in the past 30 years…”

The Washington Post has a long article on the Iowa caucuses, and speculates that perhaps the Ames straw poll won’t matter so much now that Giuliani and McCain have conceded it to Romeny.

But Romney’s internal polling shows him with a 17 point lead in the state, and he won’t let up.  That gap will no doubt close in the coming months, but the race is clearly a Rudy-Mitt-Fred contest, and when Senator McCain finally recognizes reality and drops out, the folks who liked him because of his frontrunner status aren’t going to be looking to join a campaign that is losing Iowa and down in New Hampshire.
