Los Angeles Schools Closed

A little before 7AM Pacific Time the news broke that all Los Angeles Unified School District campuses were closed – all of them – because of a “credible terror threat.”  Some say “bomb,” others “electronic.”  The story is changing on a minute-by-minute basis, and will likely continue to do so throughout the day and perhaps for the next few days.

This should make plain to anyone concerned that Obama has got nothing when it comes to reassuring the nation about terrorism.  We do not have enough information on the nature of the threat to say that this is a panic response, but it is unprecedented.  What is plain is that this is a fearful response, not an assured one.  I know people that work in private schools in the LAUSD geographical area.  By 8AM they had received automated calls from their school telling them, a) they had no threat, b) school was on, and c) the campus had been searched and secured.  That is an assured response.

Regardless of how it all works out with this threat it is another government fail.  LAUSD is clearly ill prepared to deal with a threat of this nature, but that is at least in part because the administration failed to lead them.  This administration has been way too busy telling us terrorism is under control when they should have been supplying information to local agencies of all sorts about possible terrorism scenarios and how to plan for them.  This administration has put way too many resources into potential future problems via climate change when all around them their citizens might die today.  This administration is too busy breaking the law instead of helping its citizens avoid death by terrorists and law breakers.

The media circus that is passing for our current election cycle becomes all the more disappointing in light of events like San Bernardino and now this.  Right now I am praying for the students, faculty and staff of LAUSD – may they all be safe.  But I am also praying for tonight’s debate.  My prayer is that it will be solid and substantive.  I pray that the American people will watch in droves and see who is serious about restoring our nation to confidence and assurance.  Lord knows we need it.
