Jonathan Alter’s The Promise and Doug Lemov’s Teach Like a Champion

In addition to Meg Whitman, Chris Cillizza and Jim Geraghty, today’s show features conversations with two best-selling authors.

Newsweek’s Jonathan Alter’s The Promise, a look inside the Obama White House during the new president’s first year, is engrossing and often very revealing in unexpected ways. The president has a gratitude gap, for example, and Joe Biden as an irrepressible Labrador is not what many conservatives will expect from Alter. The book is fascinating on many levels, and Republicans especially should be reading it closely for clues to how the president will govern for the balance of this term.

I am also interviewing Doug Lemov, author of Teach Like a Champion, a book on the practical tips of master teachers which should be issued to every new teacher (and many experienced ones as well.)

The Washington Post’s Jay Mathews brought Lemov to my attention, and Lemov’s book is a wonderful encouragement to those who believe that public education can indeed be great again in the urban core of America.
