Jeff Crank for Congress, Part 5

As I have posted on below, my friend Jeff Crank is in a tough primary for the GOP nomination to Colorado’s 5th Congressional District.  I spent Saturday and Sunday campaigning for Jeff in Colorado Springs and elsewhere in the district.

Jeff’s closest opponent is Doug Lamborn, whose campaign manager is the brother of the fellow who runs the “Christian Coalition of Colorado,” which sent a second, vile hit piece against Jeff this past weekend.  Jeff’s a very, very good man who is widely respected across the district, has been endorsed by Congressmen Joel Hefley, Tom Tancredo and Duncan Hunter, as well as many other leading citizens of the district, including the president of Focus on the Family.  The result has been a firestorm of disgust rightly directed at Doug Lamborn.

Monday’s Pueblo Chieftain reports:

State Sen. Doug Lamborn’s campaign denied any connection to the mailing, but several campaign staffers told reporters they quit over the incident.

A comment to an earlier post reports:

So viperously vile and untruthful was the first mailing that 5 Colorado Springs pastors of large churches condemned both the mailing as well as the Christian Coalition of Colorado. Among those condemning these means and methods was Pastor Ted Haggard, who shepherds the largest church in Colorado Springs (11,000 people) called New Life Church. He is also the head of the National Association of Evangelicals.

Excellent.  Doug Lamborn should drop out rather than attempting to win in so ugly a fashion.  This is a district targeted by the DailyKos folks.  If Lamborn wins via these tactics, a lot of GOP voters are going to sit it out. Sliming a very, very good man is not the way to win, and the Lamborn staffers who quit in disgust know that. They also know a much more important thing: Ends do not justify the means.

Please consider helping Jeff respond to these smears with a donation of $25, $50, $100 or more.  What had been an interesting and hard fought race has become a referendum on the tactics acceptable to people of faith in the public square. The attacks on Jeff Crank are not acceptable, so please support Jeff in this last week.
