Israel and Hamas, And A Visit From Daniel Silva

“[N]o government of any country can tolerate the kind of attacks on its civilians that Hamas is undertaking with its missile barrage,” writes Jonathan Tobin in Commentary Magazine.  He is of course correct and that is the crucial understanding of what will happen today and in the3 days ahead in Israel and in Gaza.

Yesterday was a fun day, with the talk of Cleveland, the convention and LeBron –but not in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and Haifa where missiles rained down, even with Iron Dome operating with its remarkable accuracy.  Israel is acting to stop the barrage, and the scope of its military response is growing.

“From our standpoint, this is a campaign that will not end anytime soon, and we must continue to maintain stamina and patience,” Israel’s Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon declared. “We will continue to hit Hamas and other terrorist organizations hard from the air, at sea, and on the ground in order to ensure the security of the citizens of Israel.”

“Obama has not yet publicly embraced Hamas. He simply ignores it. Hamas doesn’t rate a mention,” Powerline’s Scott Johnson notes. “Obama’s silence regarding Hamas is the midpoint on his journey toward the post-presidential phase of Jimmy Carter’s career as a Middle East peacemaker.”

Whatever the president and his team of bumblers discuss or don’t discuss, the focus of today’s show will be on events in Israel and will include a conversation with best-selling novelist Daniel Silva on his new Gabriel Allon thriller, The Heist, sure to be a #1 best-seller across the world.  It is actually tragic that Silva writes about events so timely they could come from this morning’s newspapers, but it is a great talent to take the snarl of headlines and heated rhetoric and produce a coherent narrative that teaches as it entertains.  Don’t miss our conversation about The Heist in the second hour of today’s show.

Yesterday’s program featured interviews with RNC Chairman Reince Priebus, Ohio Senator Rob Portman and the Washington Post’s Robert Costa –all on the choice of Cleveland as the host of the GOP’s 2016 convention.  For details on the selection process, run through those transcripts over at the transcript page –and along the way you’ll find some clues to Senator Portman’s intentions vis-a-vis 2016.
