In Praise Of Clarity: The New Romney Ad “Jihad”

Friday, October 12, 2007  |  posted by Hugh Hewitt

The text of the new Mitt Romney ad is worth reading before you watch it:

It’s this century’s nightmare, Jihadism-violent, radical Islamic fundamentalism.

Their goal is to unite the world under a single Jihadist caliphate.

To do that, they must collapse freedom-loving nations like us.

As President, I’ll strengthen our intelligence services.

Increase our military by at least 100,000.

And monitor the calls Al-Qaeda makes into America.

And we can and will stop Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

I’m Mitt Romney and I approved this message.

This is a serious message that manages to communicate in 30 seconds exactly what the country needs to hear.  It is a message Hillary cannot deliver with a straight face as she has opposed, among other things, the reformed FISA and has co-sponsored legislation limiting a president’s ability to stop Iran from going nuclear.

The points made in this ad, along with the looming changes in the United States Supreme Court and the need to keep the economy vibrant, are the entire fall campaign.

What looming changes in the Supreme Court?  Justice Stevens is 87.  Justice Ginsburg is 74.  Justices Scalia and Kennedy are 71.  Justice Breyer is 69. Justice Souter is 68.

The campaign ahead will be as clear a choice as it is possible to provide the American people, and Romney and the other GOPers are right to begin now to make the vast divide between the McGovern Democrats led by Hillary and the rest of the country the centerpiece of the next year’s debates.  A Hillary presidency means a foreign policy of appeasement, a massive expansion of the government sector, and four to six SCOTUS justices in the mold of Justice Ginsburg.
