If You Didn’t Want Immigration Reform To Pass

If you were the president and you didn’t wan’t immigration reform to pass this year, you’d leak an unrealistic, impossible-to-achieve “draft” designed only to shatter productive negoitations underway among serious people of both parties.

The serious people have been trying to figure out the border security steps that must first be in place before moving on to the thornier issues of regularization and progress is being made, but of course such a productive process would do nothing to help the president’s already faltering dream of a 2014 re-taking of Congress.  (Gun control is turning out not to be a rallying cry and the Obama Sequester is going to reveal a president who’s economic “plans” are simply incoherent.)  All that is left is to derail immigration reform and attemnpt to blame the GOP.

It is much, much harder to implement Alinskyite campaign tactics when there isn’t a specific target to isolate and pummel like Mitt Romney.  Constructive engagement in the legislative process has never been the president’s strong suit.  Indeed, the president has never done it at all, not with the Stimulus, Obamacare or Dodd-Frank.  The president is the biggest obstacle to immigration reform because his big objective of this year and next is a Democratic majority in the House, and bipartisan immigration reform won’t help that goal a bit.
