One reason for increasing optimism among Republicans is that the party has money and GOTV sophistication –and the president.

Read this Indianoplis Star report on President Bush, Laura Bush and just about everyone else barnstorming through the Hoosier state’s 9th District.  Key graphs:

Bush will pump up 9th District voters at a rally for Sodrel on Saturday in Sellersburg, north of Louisville, Ky. Laura Bush is visiting Columbus for Sodrel today. Bush’s budget director campaigned with Sodrel in the district Monday and Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings will campaign with 2nd District Rep. Chris Chocola in Kokomo on Thursday….

In addition, the national party recently spent nearly $500,000 in ads attacking Sodrel’s Democratic challenger, former U.S. Rep. Baron Hill, Seymour.

The Beltway-Manhatten echo chamber has convinced itself that Bush is a burden on candidates this cycle, but in fact in many places he was, is and will remain a huge boost for a candidate caught in a tight race.
