As Good As Dead by Stephen L. Moore is the inaugural book in my monthly book club, and a fitting one as it is an amazing story of American endurance and heroism. The story of the Palawan POW camp where 139 Americans were massacred on December 14, 1944 even as 11 escaped through extraordinary courage and super-human effort was not known to me even though I have read far and wide in World War II history. I expect it will end up on the “must reading” list of Special Forces as the endurance displayed by these 11 is simply astonishing. Deeply humbling as it is to read about the Americans who survived, it is also a long overdue testament to the brave Filipinos who risked everything to help them escape their cruel captors. Get this book as the perfect Christmas gift for anyone who enjoys history and for anyone facing a trial. It’s message is that the will to survive cannot be underestimated.
