“He Used To Be A Congressman”: Altmire, Boccieri, Cardoza, Costa, Spence

Release of the CBO fairy tale puts the Obamacare vote on a schedule for a Sunday showdown, and the collection of Hamlets/Machiavells who are Democrats on the fence fail to realize that the longer they take to declare their votes, the greater the political damage they suffer. If they eventually topple to Pelosi this weekend, they will have succeeded only in drawing enormous attention to their curved heels. If they do so for a special deal, the fury of their constituents at being thought purchasable will be extraordinary. Dennis Cardoza and Jim Costa of California’s tortured Central Valley, where environmentalists have succeeded in shutting off water to this agricultural giant, seem to be in the latter group, trying to get some waiver from the Endangered Species Act which would never survive reconciliation in the Senate, but again demonstrating in the process their utter impotence and incompetence throughout the Delta smelt dispute.

Cardoza and Costa could easily have survived the coming GOP wave had they just said “no” to Obamacare and had they truly been working on the smelt issue all along. But they are careerist Democrats, and their maneuverings are as predictable and cynical as they will be unavailing in the November blowback.

Altmire, Boccieri, and Space, on the other had, could have held on to their seats and might still if they simply and firmly say “no.” Their districts are “no” districts –solidly “no” districts. Pelosi cannot offer them anything to compensate for the self-inflicted political wounds they are receiving every day. Politico says Boccieri received 10,000 e-mails. Far more I suspect given that this site and the sites of my colleagues Bennett, Gallagher, Prager and Medved have generated more than a million e-mails in the last few days.

Worse than e-mails, though, Boccieri’s Hamlet act has given his opponent Jim Renacci a huge visibility push, just as Altmire’s dithering has boosted Mary Beth Buchanan. The contributions are pouring into Renacci and Buchanan, and if either Boccieri or Altmire vote “yes” they will be identified as a national priority for defeat for the next six months, and the gang will say “good riddance.”

There are others in the Altmire/Boccieri camp, like Zack Space, who are just beginning to feel the political heat that would come with a “yes” vote. They have thus far avoided most of the national pressure, but a “yes” vote on the “Slaughter Solution” or the final bill itself will brand them. The NRCC will coordinate the identification of the Democrats who voted to destroy the health care system, but even if the House GOP didn’t, the new media will slice and dice the vote list. Some sad sack will think that if they declare “no” at the last minute because Nancy Pelsoi gave them a hall pass that they will have a defense against the political payback on November 2 –another example of old thinking in the new age.

Everyone knows every trick and nobody is fooled. That is what is so amazing about this debate and drama. The Congressmen presuming to radically change American healthcare aren’t even smart enough to know that we know what they are doing.

Keep calling and keep e-mailing. Keep the contributions flowing to Renacci and Buchanan. There is still a chance that Altmire and Boccieri and those like them will wake up to the fact they are nine months from unemployment or a fourth tier job in a lame duck Administration and declare their opposition in time for that declaration to make a difference.
