My late father-in-law, USMC Colonel Wilbur Helmer, second from the left, somewhere in the Pacific during WW2, when he was most definitely not a colonel.  No notes on the picture as to the other four Marines, only the notation “Approved by Navy Censor.”  My brother-in-law George, also a career USMC officer, guesses this is Bouganville in 1943, though “Colonel Will” as I called him, also served in the Guam and Okinawa campaigns. George also suspects but can’t be sure that the Marine that is second from the right is Tony Walker, a lifelong friend of Will’s, and a USMC legend, though that would likely make the photo from Guam or Okinawa.
