Jeff Crank lost last night after leading late into the evening. The absentee ballots cast after the negative attacks on him by the “Christian Coalition of Colorado” did their damage –the national organization disowned the local affiliate too late to undo the slanders– and his late surge fell short. That’s the toughest way to lose. There’s no way to sugar coat it. Losing when you should have won is very hard.
But Jeff will do the right thing and get behind Doug Lamborn, as should all 5th District voters. The GOP majority in the House is crucial to victory in the war, and Senator Lamborn faces a tough opponent in the Democratic nominee, retired Lt. Col. Jay Fawcett. If the hardworking and deeply disappointed Crank volunteers –and the folks behind the other four candidates– sit on their hands, the seat could go blue. On the morning after a tough, tough loss, that’s hard to imagine doing, but Jeff, General Raburn, Mayor Rivera and the others will bounce back and support Lamborn. The stakes in November are too high to do anything else.
