McCain and Giuliani attack RomneyThompson attacks Giuliani.

The pre-season is over.

Given Senator McCain’s almost non-existent support among GOP regulars, his attacks on Romney are almost certainly going to help the former Massachusetts governor.  Mayor Giuliani has got to be very careful about appearing to be McCain’s choice.  MSM has never figured this out, but Senator McCain isn’t just struggling in the primaries, he is deeply disliked by a large segment of the GOP base for a number of reasons including most importantly the Gang of 14, campaign finance “reform” and  the McCain-Kennedy immigration bill.  Mayor Giuliani has to worry about sending the wrong signals to evangelicals and other conservative activists about what a Giuliani presidency would look like.  Looking like a spoiler’s revenge on conservatives isn’t the way to do that.
