E.J. Dionne Covers for Reiner
The Washington left has always fallen hard for the Hollywood left, and the latest exhibit in that long line of swoons is E.J. Dionne’s column on Rob Reiner in today’s Washington Post, which fairly trmebles with admiration for Reiner, and which addresses the wrongful diversion of $23 million in taxpayer funds in this fashion:
Reiner ran into a flap last week because a state commission he heads recently spent $23 million on ads touting the importance of early education. He took a leave as chairman of the First 5 California Children and Families Commission last Friday to try to tamp down the controversy over whether state money had been indirectly used to support a future ballot proposition.
Nevermind is the bottom line: Lefties can loot the treasury if they mean well.
This isn’t a debate about preschool, though Prop 82 is a crazy scheme.
It is a debate about the legality of using public funds to support a private political agenda.
If a Republican had done what Reiner’s state commission had done, the investigations would be in full swing, and Reiner would have been obliged to do more than take a face-saving leave of absence from a Commission to which he hasn’t even been reappointed.
Dionne missed that. Starts got in his eyes.
