Defending Defense

Vanity Fair’s new blockbuster on the PLA’s cyber warfare comes too late to influence the push to gut Defense spending, but it should help start the debate over the madness of even more cuts should the supercommittee deadlock. (HT: Mike Allen in this morning’s Playbook.)

Other crucial background reading for the debate over defense ahead: Andrew Krepinevich’s “Why Air/Sea Battle?”

In fact, bookmark the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments and the Center’s work closely as the cuts roll out.

The GOP presidential candidates have to take and early and hard line against gutting DoD, and the Vanity Fair article on Operation Shady Rat should be in all of their in-boxes this morning. In his book On China, Dr. Kissinger closed with a chapter noting the rise of the “tigers” within the PLA, and in my interview with him (transcript here) he pointed to the South China Sea as a flashpoint. Even if we indulged the belief that al Qaeda was fatally wounded, the threats from Iran and the PRC are very real and growing just as we begin carving up the defense budget.

President Obama has shown himself supremely indifferent to the emerging threats around the world, but even the Nobel laureate’s extremely high regard for himself should be shaken a bit by the behavior of the PRC’s most aggressive elements.
