I confess, I like Chris Matthews. When I have appeared on his show he’s always been charming, engaging, and full of energy even as his questioning wandered. His books are pretty good as well.
But Matthews went far off the rails in the course of a bizarre interview on Imus this morning. One excerpt is an example of the entire interview:
I don’t know what this guy, the vice president, is. The vice president, you notice how he hides during difficult times? He’s in his bunker, he’s in his undisclosed location. Where’s Cheney in all this? He just fades everytime something happens.
Matthews lays into Joseph Lieberman (‘further to the right than the president,”) asserts that nobody’s vote matters anymore, and engages in what can only be described as one of the longest, most disjointed and simply hysterical rants I have ever heard from a major media figure. Another small bit:
What’s the bigger picture? What do we need as a president? And part of it is a president who is more, you know, he needs a better response time, he doesn’t come into these issues three, four days late, like Bush does. He’s somewhere in the back, or on his ranch. God knows where he is when Katrina hits, or 9/11 even –he was off somehwere. We want a president without a ranch. I’m sorry, you own one. We want someone who’s there on the beat. Who seems to be sharper about the issues, and moves quick and comes and speaks before he talks to somebody named Karl Rove or somebody like that.
When next the elders of the MSM tribe gather to moan the loss of civility in politics, I hope somebody brings along this tape. The fever swamp of the left is giving off vapors that have spread the contagion very far indeed.
And I haven’t even quoted the Matthews commentary on Israel.
