Person of the Year 2013

Haven’t written a title like that in a long time.

Pope Francis is an extraordinary man having a profound impact on the world, just as his two predecessors did.  That Time would acknowledge him as the single most important news-maker in 2013 even after his traditionalist theology has become obvious is something of a marvel.

Read Kathryn Jean Lopez for the best American lay Catholic take on Francis, which quotes quite a lot from the key leadership of the American church, including Cardinal Dolan and Archbishop Chaput.  There is simply nothing new in Francis’ statements, and much that is very old, but the power of modern media is amplifying his obvious love of the poor, simplicity, and gentleness, just as it does Dolan’s great good humor, Chaput’s intellect and other Catholic leaders’ strengths whenever the MSM gets out of the frame long enough to let the leadership be seen or heard.

Earlier this tweet from Francis:

Mary, Our Mother, sustain us in moments of darkness, difficultly and apparent defeat.

I think liberal non-Catholics are simply perplexed that American conservative Catholics are generally not anything except very happy with the Pope, even as they debate his approach to economics.

Perfect day for Arthur Brooks to continue as my guest host.  He can explain why the pope makes him happy, even as he works to make clear that the answers the world needs to make the lot of the poor better are found in free markets and earned success.
