Chris Cillizza reports that RNC Chair Reince Priebus has put together a committee to bring reason to bear on the GOP presidential nominating process. Long overdue, this committee can negotiate a series of debates, formats and moderators, can determine who ought to be invited –proposed “Kucinich/Keyes” rule: if most reasonable people say there is no chance of your winning, you don’t get to be on the stage– and can select the moderators and questioners. By all means include responsible MSMers even when they are left of center like Politico’s John Harris, but block individual and institutions which are hyper-Democratic partisans like NBC. Include opinion journalists of the right and above all, set up the debates so that the issues of concern to the GOP voting base get discussed in depth.
This isn’t hard to do, and if a schedule of monthly debates beginning in August or September were quickly published–and yes, the Reagan Library would be a great place to launch them– the candidates could say “I will be at those and no others,” the nominating process would be greatly improved over 2012.
