Then read this account of Diane Van Deren's life. Van Deren is about to tackle the "Iditarod Trail International, 'the world's longest human-powered winter race,' an insane crucible where competitors run, ski or bicycle through 350 miles of tundra wilderness, where 50-below-zero temperatures and wild moose lurk, with virtually no outside support."
