Nicholas Kristof column today on the killing fields of the Congo is tough to read but deserves an enormous audience, just as the people of the Congo deserve much more from the world than it has received. I have no idea how much force would be necessary to impose order on the country, but there doesn't even appear to be a debate on what to do much less how to do it. The country's troubles have been going on for more than a decade with staggering casualty rates. " A
peer-reviewed study," Kristof notes, "found that 5.4 million people had already died in this war as of April 2007, and hundreds of thousands more have died as the situation has deteriorated since then."
