“Behavior That Gets Rewarded Gets Repeated.”

Tuesday, March 20, 2007  |  posted by Hugh Hewitt

This is a line near the end of Eugene Volokh’s fine essay on how a university must respond to the attempt to suppress debate via thuggish tactics.  (HT: Instapundit.)

Read the entire essay, of course, but memorize the title line to this post because it has served well over many years in many situations.  We see in the debate over Attorney General Gonzalez another occasion to keep the caution in mind:  If he is forced out over this petty and trumped up “scandal,” the Bush Adminstration will be inviting another such attack every month or couple of weeks, with demands for more e-mails and then more resignations.  Whatever works gets repeated, period.

As I wrote yesterday, the president has to tell the Democrats –and a few members of his own party– that he runs the executive branch, and that they can pound sand.  No White House officials will testify and no cabinet members will be forced out because Chuck Schumer needs to raise money.
