Yesterday I asked Rick Santorum about his willingness to swear off federal funding of the fall campaign if he is the nominee. The senator did, which is almost an obligatory position given the fact that about a billion dollars will be spent by or on the president’s behalf come the last three months of the campaign. Given that the GOP nominee and the super Pacs supporting him must raise and spend hundreds of millions of dollars, electability will in large part be a function not only of issues but also of the capacity to raise and effectively deploy those hundreds of millions. Past performance is no guarantee of future success in the world of investment as the ads are obliged to tell us, but past performance in the world of fundraising is very much just such an indication, which is why this graphic from Politico matters so much:
