“At Least” Until Next Sunday?
On the eve of Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice’s visit to Jerusalem, senior officials believe Israel has an American nod to continue operations against Hezbollah at least until next Sunday.
In his radio address today, the president referred to the “terrorist group Hezbollah,” and stated:
I’ve directed Secretary of State Rice to travel to the Middle East in the coming days to discuss the best ways to resolve this crisis with leaders in the region. Secretary Rice will make it clear that resolving the crisis demands confronting the terrorist group that launched the attacks and the nations that support it….By its actions, Hezbollah has jeopardized Lebanon’s tremendous advances and betrayed the Lebanese people.
It is difficult to imagine the president imposing any deadline whatsoever on a nation under daily terrorist attack by dozens and sometimes hundreds of rockets and missiles.
Hezbollah is a terrorist organization, whether or not CNN brands it as such. Though the suffering of innocent Lebanese is terrible, that suffering cannot be addressed in any lasting fashion unless and until the terrorists are forced from their safe havens and driven from the country. A cease-fire with the terrorists still in place simply postpones the battle and makes it even more terrible when it comes.
Because Hezbollah and its sponsors in Iran and Syria are dedicated to the destruction of Israel, the idea of some cobbled-together “solution” that doesn’t involve the disarmament of Hezbollah is a mirage.
