An Al Qaeda Civil War?
Memeorandum points us to a piece in London’s Daily Mail that reports on the theory that bin laden’s #2, Amam al-Zawahiri, set up the terrorist leader so Zawahiri could move up to control the network of killers.
No one can say whether this is true or just a clever plant by Zawahiri enemies or rivals, but if you have read about the bitter in-fighting within al Qaeda in Lawrence Wright’s The Looming Tower you won’t doubt the potential for it being true. If you haven’t yet read it, you really ought to before engaging in any commentary on the future of the terrorist group. Wright also has a short piece on the killing of bin Laden up at The New Yorker.
