A Call To Arms For Life

If you have not heard about the NY and VA abortion bills by now, please read the reporting and commentary from Nina Bookout, David French and Jim Geraghty then come back.  Worthy stuff there.  But the most interesting and important piece on the subject appeared in just the last few hours by the Vice President – Mike Pence.   Tne Vice President is right on with his denunciation of the legislation:

This shameless embrace of a culture of death is startling to every American who cherishes life. Not too long ago, the Democratic party’s stated position was that abortion should be “safe, legal, and rare.” It was this widespread rejection of late-term abortion that led a large bipartisan majority in Congress to pass the partial-birth-abortion ban in 2003. But now look at how far the Democratic party has fallen.

To support, let alone cheer, late-term abortions not only marks a disturbing step backward by so-called “progressives” — it also violates every demand of human decency. As modern science has moved the point of viability ever earlier in pregnancy, most Americans have agreed that a child who can survive outside the womb deserves a chance at life. Only a handful of countries, including China and North Korea, allow late-term abortions.

He calls us to action:

These Virginia and New York late-term abortion bills should be a call to action for all Americans. A society can be judged by how it treats its most vulnerable, and it would be unconscionable for us to let this moment pass in silence. We must recommit ourselves, today and every day, to restoring the sanctity of life to the center of American law.

And he is hopeful:

And thanks to the efforts of millions of compassionate and caring Americans across the country, we are changing minds and turning hearts to embrace life as never before. Fewer abortions are being performed than ever recorded — a decrease of more than 50 percent since the 1980s. This is a true cause for celebration.

So even in this dark moment in our nation’s history, Americans should take heart. The New York and Virginia bills aren’t some bold departure into a brave new world. They are the last gasp of a dying movement that stands in stark and irreconcilable contrast with our nation’s timeless founding principles.

I share his hope…but only if we take seriously his call to action.

The host spent a great deal of time on this morning’s show, when he wasn’t talking down the Patriots, discussing and analyzing the latest from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.  (Link behind the Hughniverse paywall)  The Representative is harbinger of the next generation and it can be frightening.  She is a particular kind of idealist, combined with an extraordinary ignorance, that while not particularly supportive of abortion might think something like this is good out of a libertarian impulse that puts far more faith in humanity than we have earned throughout history.  Her discussion of “transition” indicates just the sort of sexual liberality that often results in “unwanted” pregnancy.  It also reveals a level of self-absorption that can fail to bond with a newly birthed child.

Which brings to mind the question of what kind of action are we called to in response to these legal atrocities.  The Vice President has called us to advancement and support of good abortion legislation.  But we have to go farther than that – such legislation is doomed if people do not clutch tightly to a respect for life – something no legislation can ever engender.  I fear we have gotten ourselves into this mess by relying on legislation to do what parents, and teachers, and evangelists and church leaders are supposed to do.

We need more than to be called to action.  We are called to arms.  And just like any army, we all have different roles to pay to win the war.  But also like any army, we have to go through basic training.  Which calls to mind a very particular passage of scripture:

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Stand firm therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Legislation deal only in the natural world, but legislation as horrific as what we are seeing in NY and VA is a physical manifestation of a battle happening on supernatural levels.  As Christians we believe we are created in God’s image – that means we are more than merely physical, we can access the supernatural.  We have to prepare ourselves on all levels for this battle.  as I said, we have relied on the merely physical and natural in this battle and by failing to engage on the supernatural level, the battle is slipping away from us.

I am not calling on any one to cast our demons or speak in tongues or anything like that.  But I am calling on everyone to pray.  Ask God for help and listen to His answer.  Listen to and absorb truth.  Do your best to be righteous.  Share your faith and your love of life.  Have faith – deep, abiding faith.
