At a time when the president is pushing the biggest tax hike in history, it is both astonishing and revealing that so many on his staff could owe so much.
In my time in Reagan’s White House Counsel’s office, the clearance form had a last question that ran something like “Is there anything else in your background that could embarrass the president?”
Not paying your taxes would have qualified in Reagan’s era. Either they have stopped asking the question, reading the form, or the sense of entitlement and attitude of arrogance flowing out of the Oval Office has permeated the entire staff to the extent that many of them genuinely believe taxes are for the people out there, not for them.
If this story had been out there before a Bush presser, how many questions do you think W would have gotten about it?
